It's been a while...

I haven't posted in a while. I went on leave to Seoul, Korea and was gone for 26 days. I didn't see as much as I would have liked to, but I got quite a bit of rest. The vacation was nice, but the travel there and back was exhausting. Instead of flying directly to Korea from Kuwait, I had to go back through Atlanta and then west to Korea. Same thing coming back.
The resort I stayed at, Dragon Hill Lodge, was nice for being on a military post. It was within walking distance of the "International Tourism" area, Itaewon. It's a bunch of stores selling all sorts of merchandise (and a lot of knock-offs). There are bars, restaurants, and "adult entertainment" on in the area affectionately call Hooker Hill (it is steep).
I was almost glad to get back to Kabul and back at work. Time is moving forward and it's less than 2 months from departure. Still much to be done, but I hope it will go by quickly.

German weapons range...

Pretty nice scenery and an all around nice day out at the range...We fired pistol, rifle, and machine gun to qualify on the German weapons (I got the Gold baby!)

Winter...gotta love it!

Heading to the airport this morning...for the 3rd day in a row...just to get turned around (which is why I can post this picture)

There's more than just sand in the Middle East...

Doha is a very modern city. Everything looks new and clean. We went to the mall and tried the indoor snow slide...look at me go...

Christmas in Arabia...

R&R pass in Doha, Qatar with SGM and LTC B. It was just like any modern western city...except for how many people dressed. This is the 4 story mall we visited...with a Christmas tree at the entrance (weird huh). We ate at Applebee's. Then we went shopping in the jewelry district...(check out Ali G in the back)

Bread...

So, this is Afghani (currency) straight from the bank...pretty colorful. After regime change, all of the old money was replaced by this. That's why I can buy stacks of the old stuff at the bazaar for nothing.

Bank Run...

This is my attempt at being artistic...a black and white photo. I guess it adds more drama...
Here I am standing guard over the vehicles at the bank.

Lost another one...

On to bigger and better things...or at least better things like potable water in the bathroom...

Countryside...

Took a little trip last week to Bagram Airfield. Lots of nothing, lots of mountains, lots of sheep...that's about it, except for a few camels...once you get outside the city, that is...

Trip outside the city...

Took a trip for a construction site visit today. Once outside the city, the scenery is outstanding. Of course we had to take one of our locals (name witheld for security reasons) with us to navigate. I'm starting to get the hange of driving here...you'll notice a traffic light...they don't work...

That's the "Queen's Palace" in the first picture and an intersection coming into the city in the second. You can see a lot of dwellings in the hills...

Birthday in Afghanistan...

Birthday coffee, a couple shirts, and a couple other trinkets waiting for me on my desk today...Thanks to my office mates!
All in all a pretty good day. Lucky for me it landed on a Friday. Even the steak at the dining hall was extra good tonight.

Democracy takes hold...

Sunday was parliamentary elections in Afghanistan. Ink seems to be the method of choice in 3rd world nations to distinguish who's voted...
I should have taken a picture of the guys who work in my office; instead, I have to use this stock photo from our public affairs folks...

Many nations come together...

It was weird to be in Kabul on 9/11...almost surreal, if I stop to think about it.
We had a post memorial ceremony to mark the occasion...

9/11...We remember...

A moment of silence in remembrance (I'm behind the SGM)
